The BBC gangster drama, starring Cillian Murphy, is set in Birmingham in the aftermath of World War I and finished airing series four in December.

Speaking to media at the Virgin TV BAFTAs on Sunday, Knight admitted that he knows exactly how long the programme will last – and which years it will explore.

He said: “My ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars, so always I've wanted to end it with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in 1939.

“It'll take three more series [to reach that point].”

But Knight teased that a feature film could be on the cards, sure to be of interest to avid fans.

Remaining coy, he added: “I wouldn't want to do it at the very end, but maybe in between two of the series.

The BBC Two show enjoyed success at Sunday’s awards at the Royal Festival Hall, picking up a BAFTA gong for Drama Series.
